Our Services /
Complex Mental Health Recovery Services
These services provide assessment and treatment for people with complex mental health problems, usually psychosis. It also offers treatment for alcohol addiction or abuse, for people identified as having a dual diagnosis, and for people who require brief intensive assessment and rehabilitation.
We use an evidence-based psychosocial approach to foster hope and optimism. It upholds The Retreat’s two-hundred year tradition of humane and value-based care, and strives to use this alongside contemporary research and models of care.
Service Description
The services comprise of three linked units offering the individual an opportunity to recover in an open supportive environment which matches their needs. Each person is assessed and accepted on to the unit appropriate to their current requirements, and may move between units during their recovery.
Hannah and Esther offer four intensive recovery programmes supporting people towards independent living.
Blair Atholl is a community based service for people requiring longer term placements with a rehabilitative environment.
We offer a multidisciplinary approach to care addressing the holistic needs of each person. The multidisciplinary team consists of medical, nursing, psychology, social work, OT and physiotherapy staff as well as sessional drama, art and music therapy staff - this provides continuity of care throughout an individual's journey.
Our staff are particularly experienced at working with people with difficult to manage behaviour/complex needs.
Treatment Philosophy
Key features of the programme include:
- A therapeutic environment focused on the recovery and wellbeing model promoting a sense of hope and optimism.
- Initial treatment aims to focus on the reduction of disturbed behaviour and distress, risk to self and others, moving through to the development of appropriate coping skills and self-management.
- Individual and group therapy based on Cognitive Behavioural and creative therapy principles.
- An experienced team helping to bridge the gap between inpatient care and the patient’s home area, family and Community Mental Health Team. Regular case review meetings (CPA) and discharge planning ensure a smooth transition into the community.
